What Is GEO, and Why It Changes Everything
How your future clients and customers will discover you has already changed.
By Sumaya K. Owens
Not long ago, showing up on Google meant ranking #1, building backlinks, and maintaining a keyword-dense blog. That playbook still matters, but it's no longer enough.
Today, customers are simply not scrolling down the first page of Google long enough to find your website. They’re reading Google’s AI summary at the top provided by Gemini, and making decisions based on this summary alone. Or, they're asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or other AI tools for their recommendations. They're getting a single, synthesized answer and clicking through to whoever got cited at the top of the LLM’s search results.
This is Generative Engine Optimization. GEO.
GEO is SEO v2.0. It's not a replacement, it's an evolution. Where traditional SEO optimized for Google's algorithm, GEO optimizes for how AI engines read, trust, and recommend your brand across the entire web.
The stakes are real:
AI Overviews have already driven a 30% reduction in traditional click-through rates.
Customers who find you through AI search convert at 2-5x higher rates (theoretically).
By 2027, AI search is projected to meet or surpass traditional Google (supposedly).
Admittedly, the data is a bit fuzzy on when this new LLM search trend will surpass Google. However, it's clear the trend is increasing rapidly, and so regardless of the timeline there's a real window of advantage for business owners to get ahead of the curve sooner rather than later. It takes time for a new GEO strategy to provide genuine results, usually a minimum of 3-6 months. So if you're wanting to stay on track for the upcoming 2027 shift in AI search, then investing in GEO strategies in 2026 is the perfect time to position your brand.
And here's the thing: My GEO services are 100% AI-free. Even if you're a business owner who swears you will never use AI, I am highly recommending that you start investing in this strategy now. You don't have to use AI tools, learn new software, or change how you work with clients. You just have to show up where your future customers are already searching on the internet.
You have approximately one year before LLM search is expected to meet or exceed Google. Maybe more, maybe less? Who knows in this wild AI economy. However, please remember that GEO takes 3-6 months to gain real traction. The math is simple: now is the time to invest in Generative Engine Optimization.
How GEO Actually Works, and How We Get You Ranked
AI tools search the internet differently than Google. Here's what that means for you:
When someone asks an LLM a question, it doesn't scan a ranked list of websites. It fans out across dozens of subqueries, pulling from your website, Reddit threads, YouTube, news coverage, review sites, industry publications, and more, synthesizing all of it into a single recommendation (or a summary of several top recommendations).
This is called Query Fan-Out, and every one of those sources is an opportunity for your brand to be cited.
What AI rewards:
Freshness: Recent, regularly updated content signals relevance. Stale sites get deprioritized.
Authenticity: Real voices, real expertise, real community engagement. AI is trained to spot and discount promotional fluff. Pro tip: AI does not reward AI slop. Sorry, not sorry!
Semantic Richness: Depth and specificity matter more than keyword density. Content that actually answers questions gets cited.
Presence Across Platforms: Unlike traditional SEO, there's no single domain authority score for GEO. Visibility is measured across multiple platforms, multiple prompts, run dozens of times.
The 5-Step GEO Framework we use for every client:
Audit: Review your current SEO/GEO foundation: page titles, meta tags, image alt text, FAQ sections, and blog structure
Optimize: Restructure content around real questions, add FAQ sections, build semantic depth
Build Authority: Earn mentions in industry publications, local press, and relevant directories
Expand Your Footprint: Create presence on Reddit, YouTube, and review platforms where LLMs look
Track What Matters: Measure visibility %, citation mentions, and AI-referred traffic in Google Analytics
Ethical, factual, non-promotional content is so much more important now. It's a genuine, GEO competitive advantage.
